Watercolor is a medium that has inherently liquid characteristics and a high degree of transparency. These characteristics make it the ideal method for the depiction of this subject. In an effort to show movement in the water, a technique known as "wet-into-wet" -- that is, applying paint to a surface that is already wet -- has been pushed to the extreme. In some cases, the spraying and splashing of color or water has been used to give the viewer a feeling of wave-action that adds to the life and movement of the paintings.
